The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. 2006
This installation is based on the book The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami.
It's a book that's probably most accurately described as cryptic - I'm not even going to start pretending I fully understand it. I'm not sure the nuances of the original Japanese version translate into English particularly well. Given all that it might seem like an odd choice of book to use as inspiration. But...
Even though it may be hard to follow the plot Marakami's writing creates a really strong mood. It's hard to describe, which is why I made this. It's a kind of virtual representation of the book that produces generative designs/artwork when you interact with it. Some of them are below along with a video showing some of the steps I went through to create the environment.

All of the images above are produced by the generative engine built into the project. It's something I put together for this and have since done more with on the destroy victoriana and rebuilder projects especially.
Video showing how it was built up in 3d.
